The Reeds Center

I finished The Reeds Center logo last night and sent it out today to the client! It feels really good to finish a project and the client is happy with your work. The logo has changed slightly since the last post. The client wanted all the words in the name to be the same size rather than the "The" be half the size of the title. I am excited to have another freelance job finished and will be starting on a website layout for a music company for children.

The Reed Center

I apologize for not posting anything for a long time. I have been busy with the 365 project as well as working on a logo. Today I am posting about the logo for The Reeds Center. There are 3 partners (psychologists) that created their own therapy company (center) in New York City. The concept behind the logo is that these 3 psychologists are coming together to help people grow. The situation was that they already had a logo created on a "create a logo site," however they didn't like the type face nor the color of the logo. I had to retrace the logo, as well as fix color, typeface and placement. I am not yet finished with the project, but here is what they gave me and what I have given them up-to-this-date.

365 project

My husband gave me a very good idea to start what is called a "365 Project" which is to create something once a day all year long. I guess this is also considered a New Years' resolution to draw every day. This year I plan on doing a sketch everyday and here are 2 examples from yesterday and today. They are just rough ideas and actually I really enjoy it because it doesn't take too long, nor do I have to make a long commitment to finish a project. Plus, I get to start new ideas and can take from there in to a final project if I choose. Another example is my husband is going to make a mug/cup everyday and the point is to explore new shapes and designs. I encourage anyone to do this project whether you are a photographer, writer, scientist, or whatever you enjoy doing, do something creative once a day this entire year (it's not too late to start).

Lady of the Wind

You know I have done other elements dancers so far like fire and ice and now I have decided to illustrate the wind as a dancer. I was inspired by a dancer with a flowy piece of cloth she was dancing with and it reminded me of the wind. I have gotten a bit further on this project, but I don't want to show it unfinished, so here is my sketch.

Vinyl Wall Quotes

I have been applying for Graphic Design jobs here in Salt Lake and one was a wall vinyl company that did quotes for home and office. Unfortunately, I did not get this job, because I have not had enough experience with typography. Honestly, this annoyed me because I have had quite a bit of experience in design. In my opinion wall vinyl quotes are not that difficult to make. Therefore, I created 2 samples to display. I would like to know your opinion on the typeface choice and if you'd buy one of theses. I am going to print these out on vinyl and hopefully someone will have an empty wall to display it. (Let me know if you would want to sample this or a custom quote).

Ghost Opera

Here is another Kamelot concert inspired illustration. There was another female vocalist that sang the opera vocals in the song called the Ghost Opera. So the song is based on a dark theme and if you watch the official video you can see. So I want to get across the solemnity and the sadness of the song. My illustration is in its last stage of corrections, so any advice or comments would be wonderful!

I have been so busy lately working my part time job and then catching a second wind in the evening to work on my art. I am still working on the massage logo and I came up with 3 versions and she chose "c". I went back and smoothed it out some more and showed it again. The next round she wanted heat rocks on the back of the figure and I was a little unsure about it, because I was told it looked like a reptile. Thankfully, she chose "a". Now all I have to do is send it in a package! This has been a very cool experience and I am so happy I am doing a trade for 3 very much needed massages.

A Spirited Mind & Body Logo

This past week I have been working on a logo design for the massage therapy company, A Spirited Mind & Body . I am doing my first trade with the woman who owns the company, Patricia. A logo, for 3 massages. I have posted a few sketches I came up with and Patricia chose 'E'. I am going to start refining it so it is an androgynous figure, because the company does therapy for men, women, and children.

To explain the logo ideas, the first column is going off the spirit rejuvenation feel after getting a massage. The middle column is the idea Patricia wanted me to work on (the figure lying down). The last column, I wanted to go off the aromatherapy in a spa feel. I played with lavender and vanilla flower since they are the healing flowers. Let me know what you all think about the sketches, and I would love to hear any advice on how to get creative with logo making.

My husband went to a rock concert the other night and took some pictures. I saw them and was inspired to make some vector art. I really liked this one picture of the visiting artist and how the light was pink and yellow on her. Right now I can't decide if I want to do all the belts and buckles on her outfit or if I should leave it plain. Also, there was a yellow light hitting her as well and I tried playing with that idea. It is still rough, but at least you get the idea of it. Any comments or critiques are welcome.

My mother-in-law commissioned me to do a painting of a rooster for her kitchen. It is purely for decoration and not illustrative. Here are some concepts I came up with and I am not sure which one I like best. Maybe the first one because it's so flowy and would be fun to paint. The second one is quirky and the last one is cute. So we'll see. I am hoping to get this done pretty quickly and I think it will be a good "for fun" piece to do.

I haven't posted anything lately because the company I am working with for the children's book still needs to finalize the contract. I have a lot of concept art for it, but until we figure out the copyrights I cannot post what I have been working on. So I am showing you sketches I did yesterday. The first 3 I did during church and the last one I did of my mother-in-law at a dinner party we had yesterday. I wonder if people think I am not paying attention at all when I sketch, but in reality it really helps me listen to the things going on around me, or focus on a speaker.

Hi Everyone!

So these past few weeks I have been working on a logo for my aunt's music producing company, which is mostly directed to children and infants. I worked on finding the right type face as well as how it looked for most of the time. I only had a day or 2 to work on the logo symbol and here is what I came up with.

a. I researched what a locrydian/mixocrydian and on wiki it said that an example of it is the intro to Sweet Child O' Mine. So cool! So I tried to visualize what it looked like and I came up with the movement behind the text.

b. I wanted to play with kiddie idea some more, and if the music my aunt creates were and animal it would be a bird. It is acapella and happy sounding so I felt that it fit. Although my original was said it looked like a fish so I fixed it and came up with the image below.

c. I wanted to play with the treble clef and researched it so I wouldn't be accidentally copying anyone and I came up with the above.

I have to say logo creating is fun. I still need practice, but I tried to keep to the logo design principles.

These past couple of days I had to pump out 10 drawings for a family tree for a book about the author's family (fictionalized). At my BFA show over a month ago, I got some advice on how to make this piece better. I realized that Makenna's head was going to be on the fold of the book. I went into Illustrator and moved her (and her teddy and horse) over as well as fixed the castle. It wasn't clear that the castle was a box so I added contrast and made the towers look like paper towel rolls. I am pretty excited about it and I hope you like it as well!

This one I drew at an illustration conference. The task was to take a sketch we drew of a child and make it into a character. I quite like this one.

As weird as it sounds this image came to me as I was falling asleep and I had to grab my sketch book and draw it quickly before it left my mind. It reminds me of those little Russian dolls.

Lastly I drew my friend Krysta when she was speaking in church. I am pretty proud I could get this done as she was talking and moving.

Dream

This project is title, "You are what you.." and I choose dream. It took me a while to figure out what I wanted to do for this project. Usually people think of "you are what you eat" or some other variation. One night I had a dream that I was flying and it is such a cool feeling. A lot of the time I wish I could fly in real life, but unfortunately it doesn't work that way. So this dream inspired my illustration of a girl flying. I wanted to capture that feeling of freedom I get in my dreams, like no one can catch you and nothing is tying you down. I had fun playing with the colors and shapes and just getting the feeling of flying.

Hello Everyone!

I have been working on Ballet posters for Utah's ballet west. I wasn't commissioned or anything, however I would like to show them what I have done an hopefully I can get some freelance work for them.

I had fun doing this poster. It was a difficult dance to research and the only version of the ballet I could find was a video cassette from the 1980s. I will say it is difficut to get the mood of the dance and attitude of the dancers in one shot. However, it was fun to research as well as create. Enjoy!

Sleeping Beauty poster

I did this poster for Ballet West for a class project. I had a lot of fun doing it, especially the researching. I went to the library and borrowed 4 different version of the ballet. However I only watched two realizing that they are very similar, with the exception of the costumes. I am especially happy with this piece because it is the 1st time I have done a male figure in this style. I hope you all enjoy it!

Well I have been so busy lately, some may think that I have disappeared of the face of the earth. Not so! I have been drawing, painting and working in illustrator and photoshop consistently from 4:30 am to 7 pm everyday this week to catch up in all my art projects. It came to me that I haven't posted anything new in over a week and I am excited to show you my interpretation of the sun! It is to compliment my dancing moon piece I did a few months ago. I have to say doing a graphic image of a girl doing a barrel roll was no easy task. I still have some tweaking to do, but I still want to share with you! Have a great President's day weekend!

Disobedient Elephant

This is version 1 of this illustration. The requirement of this project was to incorporate the words circus, president, and sin. When I first got this I thought it would be impossible to do. I brainstormed all the synonyms for these words to see how they could relate. I decided that president could be the ring master, since he is in charge of the circus. I wanted to make this a children's book illustration so with sin I chose disobedience, where it is not serious but enough to know that it is not an encouraged behavior. I wanted to try to make my style of my dancers fits into a children's book by mixing digital and hand drawn ink. Looking at it now I would like to change my drawing a bit by making the ring master pointing out to the arena, telling the elephant to get out there. I also want to make the elephant crossing her arms and turning her waist and head away from the ring master. I hope you enjoy it so far!

I am thrilled to say that I finished the fire maiden piece. Figuring out the fire and her neck and head were challenges for me when I was working on this piece, but I finally got through it. Another difficulty was making the dress and fire become one. I didn't want to make her look like she was being consumed by fire; that would be bad. I am pretty excited by the concept and I hope you like it too.

Hello Everyone! I am excited to say I am continuing my art deco inspired girls. I am having so much fun drawing them and I hope you all enjoy looking at my work. For this piece I want to be the opposite of my snowflake, so I chose fire. I drew this girl coming from a flame which turns into her dress, which I am totally excited about. I put my sketch in the computer and now I am going to do a value study of my piece.

I am happy to say that I have a revised illustration to display for everyone! I have been taking a break and trying to recover from this past semester. Yesterday I had the desire to fix my snowflake girl and here she is! I made the extensions from her body bigger so you can see them, rotated the snowflake for design interest, and lots of other tweaking. I hope you all are having a wonderful holiday! Happy New Year!

So for the past year I have been working on Trevor's uncle's theater room. I had to divide up the columns into even spaces then I drew all the hieroglyphics on the columns. Now I am painting them with house paint. I finished one column today and here it is!

The Transfer Experiement

Hello all! So this week I have learned a new way to transfer and image on to illustration board. My husband, Trevor taught me it and I have to say I am glad he is going into Art Ed.
So here is the process: you print out your image reversed onto regular printer paper. Then you cake on the gesso on to the ink side of the image (no ink is showing through the gesso). Then you put the paper on to the board or canvas (make sure there is no gesso on the other side or it won't work). Then you take a bone folder or any thing that can smooth out the image on to the board. Once again, try not to get gesso on the back of the paper. Then you let it sit for at least 24 hours. When time comes, you fill a cup with water and you out your fingers in it. Then gently rub the paper away with out removing the ink. If it starts turning white you rubbed too much. When the paper is gone you have finished the transfer!
Now, I rubbed too much so you can learn from my example, but it was a lot of fun to do!

lunch color study

Hello friends and family! I am happy to post up my color study of my kitty trying to get a meal. However the colors are slightly desaturated compared to my original in illustrator. I am going to make some more design changes and then print it out. I will then put mat medium on top and paint on top of it. Hopefully the finish will have lots of colors and nice modeling. I can't wait to start the finished product!

I realized it was time for another post and luckily I have been working on a project. I decided to do a fun piece where a cat decides to go fishing for lunch. The top one was my first time trying to render it, but the body of the cat was stagnant and I changed it to look like he was in water. The second one I want to push the values some more and start on color. I have been playing with it already, but I am finding it difficult with so many elements in my piece. I just need to finalize a palette and go with it. I love working on this piece and I can't wait to start painting it!

Here is a project that I finished a week or so ago. It is for my landscape painting class and we needed to incorporate a landscape with a figure in it for the assignment. Since we are painting the Provo landscape, I thought a man hiking would be appropriate. Although I am not finishe with the piece yet, (some more design fixin') I am pretty happy with it so far. This was done in acrylic paint on illustration board. I have fun playing with textures and color as well as painting in a stylized manner. Enjoy!

I just wanted to follow up on past blog posts to fill you all in. So as for the pumpkin carving contest, my husband and I got 3rd place, which means we got $25 off of our rent this month! It was pretty cool. We were succeeded by a Hannibal mask, and possibly a storm trooper, which were nice, but I still like mine better. :)

Now as far as the Dancing moon goes, I still have some revisions to make. More anatomy fixes and some color changes and it should be good enough to send out next Wednesday to art directors in the Children's book publishing business. There will be a final post on that this next week.

The other mailer I am doing with the animals on the bicycle are still with my professor. I can't wait to get it back and show all of you what it looks like!

Newest Moon

Here is my newest illustration of the moon. I made her more anatomically correct and added some silver paint to her bodice and shoes. I am still deciding if I like it or not. The great thing about doing an illustration on the computer is that I can redo the print as many times as I'd like.
Sorry about the poorly taken picture of the detail, I need better lighting as well as a camera. One day when I have some money I will purchase one. In the mean time, I will do my best to get the best pictures I can.

Here is the dancing moon illustration. I was originally going to go with the 1st one. I went through an hour in the printing lab to print it up right. I later was playing with it in photo shop to see what texture looked like and I love it! It gave a starry night feel and added more stars to her hair as well as decorating her bodice. I am very happy with the results. What do you think?

I am excited that I am doing a new project! I decided to do a Art Deco influenced illustration. I am illustrating a poem called The Night Will Never Stay and this is what I came up with. I tried to recreate the moon to avoid any cliches. I drew a female moon dancing across the night sky to give the feeling that she cannot stay in one place. I should have the finished product up in a week. Enjoy!

So here is my first sketch of 2 children biking and I showed it Greg Newbold and he gave me excellent advice. He said it might be better is the children were animals like a penguin and a polar bear so that more people can relate to the piece. I sketched a lot more figuring out what animals to use and what they look like.

Here is what I came up with, but I wanted to push it some more in making the characters and bike into simple shapes.

Nature and Nurture Show

I am excited to say that my "Mother and Child" piece got into the Nature and Nurture show in the HFAC. My piece is located on the 4th floor, so stop by if you can. I realized after it was up that I need to get less reflective glass so you can look at the art without looking at yourself. I guess that is part of the learning process of being an artist.

So I am still learning how to be an avid blogger, and I am embarrassed I haven't put anything up lately. So here is a piece I just finished for the Nature and Nurture show at the BYU HFAC. It starts this Friday.

I wanted to capture a peaceful moment between a mother and baby, and from what I understand, it can be one of the best feelings. This time I included my sketch to show you all.
I made a few edits such as redesigning the mother's hair for compositional issues and fixing her hand to make it aesthetically pleasing.

I really enjoyed painting this and playing with textures as well as pattern. I used acrylic paint and I love the way it looks. I hope you enjoy!

I did this piece in my Illustration 2 class during Fall semester. I had a lot of fun doing this piece because it was our first fully clothed figure in this class and I loved painting this purple kimono. I painted this in oil on canvas.

So I have finally added some more work from last semester and there is more coming. This was an in-class assignment for Illustration 2. I had a lot of fun on this project because we were allowed to crop the figure and focus on the face. I played with the color in the face with the yellows and reds. I am thinking about submitting this piece to the Society of Illustrators competition this Friday.

Here is the 3rd still life I did in class this semester. I haven't posted the second one yet, but that will happen soon. I still need to work on it, so consider this the before picture. I painted this in oil on a canvas panel. It is a random compilation of object my class set up, but they work well together. I had the hardest time with the goblet with painting a correct eclipse in perspective. Despite the difficulty, I really enjoyed painting the bottle. Since I have started art, I have been doing better at them.

Here is my first still life of the semester. It is done with oil paint on canvas. I spent about 3 class periods on it and I learned a lot about how to make a composition as well as how to paint glass. It is more difficult than it should be.

I did this figure study in oil paint in class for Illustration 2 with the help of my professor Brother Barrett. I learned a lot about how to paint flesh tones and not make the figure look "chalky" (adding too much white paint). I learned that you need to paint more from a designer view point rather than just copying what you see. It is not as easy as you would think. You have to paint the figure in reds and yellows as well as other colors you normally would not see by just copying.

Basic color studies

In my illustration class we were learning more about color and how it reflects in its environment. This is an oil painting of an orange with different color walls and floor to observe how light and color interact on each other. I found that the most interesting interaction is on the right side of the orange, the red wall is throwing color into the orange creating a mixed color.

I made this box box out of another box to make it the perfect size. Then I put it in the colorful setting to further my understanding of how light and color interact with my box. It was fun to see that the red is reflected up into the bottom of the box and the yellow is on the side and top of the white of the box. When I started this project I thought it was going to be easy since the object is angular, but in reality that was the toughest part for me, was correcting my perspective of the box in a real space.

Illustration/ still lifes

This assignment was a simple still life for my illustration class. It had to be one color (monochromatic) and in oil paint. The point of the still life was to continue learning how to use the medium of oil and paint realistically.

This was my first monochromatic still life this semester and for the assignment we were required to have 2 fruit and a mug. I spent a long time trying to get get the values correct, and push my darks. I have a habit of wanting to make everything light, but I do my best to push my range of values in a piece.

Both of these where done at the beginning of September.

Here are a few of my favorite life figure drawings I did earlier this year. All of these are from life (drawings done in a studio) in graphite and the time spent on them is about 6 hours for each one. I have chosen 4 out of many drawings I did this past winter semester and I will be posting more later.

Black and White still life done in gouache. This was one of my first assignments of the semester. The painting was to portray the joy of a childhood Christmas. It was difficult to do, because our limitation was to only use black and white paint and the best way to show the mood of joy is in color.

I absolutely love this one of Mary had a little lamb in Peru. I did lots of research on clothing and environments in Peru. I wanted to show the scene where the children laughed an played. It was a different take because most of the rhythm illustrations are Mary walking to school with a lamb tagging close behind.

This is one of my favorite still lives I did this past year because I designed it using triangles. This assignment was to illustrate nutrition in gouache. I really wanted to do good nutrition because I think it looks more aesthetically pleasing than hamburgers and milkshakes.

This is a book cover for Narcissus and Echo. I had the opportunity to have my friends model for me and I was able to get photo reference for this piece. I used the triangle composition for this intimate setting tto make it more dynamic.

Here is an illustration for an editorial piece on severe anxiety. I wanted to show that this man stuck himself in a hole to avoid social contact with coworkers and also to show that he has the ability to climb out of his hole. This piece I wanted to paint in a graphic style because I enjoy looking at graphic illustration for editorial pieces.

All of these are done in gouache paint and on illustration board.
